Bakerloo line

Opened in 1906 as the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway, and soon known by a newspaper's nickname, “Bakerloo”. North of Queen's Park its trains share track with the London Overground's Lioness line to Harrow & Wealdstone.

History

  1. The Baker Street & Waterloo Railway opens between Baker Street and Kennington Road (now Lambeth North).
  2. An Evening News writer's nickname, “Bakerloo”, becomes the railway's name about four months after opening.
  3. Extended south from Lambeth North to Elephant & Castle.
  4. Extended north from Baker Street to Marylebone (opened as Great Central).
  5. Extended to Edgware Road.
  6. Extended to Paddington.
  7. Extended to Kilburn Park, with a new station at Warwick Avenue.
  8. Extended to Queen's Park.
  9. Trains run on to Willesden Junction.
  10. Maida Vale opens, the first station staffed entirely by women.
  11. Kensal Green opens.
  12. Services extended to Watford Junction.
  13. Piccadilly Circus to Elephant & Castle closed and the tunnels plugged during the Munich crisis; reopened on 8 October.
  14. Bakerloo trains start running to Stanmore, over the Metropolitan's branch via new tunnels from Baker Street to Finchley Road.
  15. The Stanmore branch passes to the new Jubilee line (the last Bakerloo trains ran on 30 April). Trafalgar Square becomes part of Charing Cross.
  16. Last day of Bakerloo trains north of Stonebridge Park.
  17. Trains restored to Harrow & Wealdstone.
  18. Peak service cut from 22 to 20 trains an hour because of the age and availability of the 1972 Stock fleet.
